Design as Innovation

The design approach and design research are key elements of successful innovative processes.
Creatively engaged in creating the future the designer collaborates with users as well as stakeholders in the client organization to deliver the best and most appropriate product, service or system to fulfill the needs and desires of the market.

Collective Intelligence in the creative process

Just like no man is an island no product can be created be one person. Based on a thorough design research and a shared knowledge of the current situation, a process that engages the collective intelligence of the entire developmental team as well as its closest neighbors is needed to reach the best possible solution.
Collective intelligence is often only engaged in isolated brain storming sessions, but can just as well be utilized through the entire developmental process through personal and organizational practices as well as supporting technologies like web 2.0 platforms.

The Social Product

When is a product deeply meaningful to its users and buyers? On the internet we currently see a spurring of social product and services that link and connect us in new ways and for new purposes. Or actually the purpose is ancient: As a social beast human beings have always had a desire to both stand out and be part of a social context at the same time. How do we as designers develop product that can fit this desire and how can we develop platforms that enable new social patterns to emerge and possibly novel social actions to impact the world.

This page is in some sense the ‘product catalogue' of MVL. This is where I try to describe how I can be of service to you as you are considering going into an innovation process aimed at (re)designing your own product portfolio.

MVL offers as leading edge perspective on user experience and in collaboration a client or partner we develop use scenarios, prototypes and other forms of design proposals.

How we are going to collaborate is of course completely depending on who you are and what kind of process you are envisioning. Meeting and exploring how we can collaborate is essential as a starting point for the further process. Generally I see my competences best explained in these our qualities of design consulting. In close dialogues we can discover how they best fit your needs:

  • Creative design work; where I work directly with the design challenge for the client. Analyses of the situation both written and in visual design work. Experience modeling in paper, animation, video prototypes, physical prototypes, scenarios and product concepts. User studies and user centered (even user participation) design processes are integral parts of this form of design work
  • Critical design work; where I evaluate your design work e.g. from the perspective of social user experience design and give feedback on how to improve the design in relation to the specific goals and intentions of the business concept
  • Facilitating design work; where I guide, advise and lead creative processes with e.g. a user centered focus or in understanding and exploring social situations. Facilitation is basically about inspiring, framing and exploring the complex creative processes together with a team.
  • Investigative design work; where I conduct deeper inquiries of potentials in markets or materials for a client. This is a longer process than usual design work and utilizes extended methods from scientific design research. The outcome of this process can be anything from product concepts to strategic proposals - whatever will have that best impact on visionary thinking in the clients organization
