Design as Innovation

The design approach and design research are key elements of successful innovative processes.
Creatively engaged in creating the future the designer collaborates with users as well as stakeholders in the client organization to deliver the best and most appropriate product, service or system to fulfill the needs and desires of the market.

Collective Intelligence in the creative process

Just like no man is an island no product can be created be one person. Based on a thorough design research and a shared knowledge of the current situation, a process that engages the collective intelligence of the entire developmental team as well as its closest neighbors is needed to reach the best possible solution.
Collective intelligence is often only engaged in isolated brain storming sessions, but can just as well be utilized through the entire developmental process through personal and organizational practices as well as supporting technologies like web 2.0 platforms.

The Social Product

When is a product deeply meaningful to its users and buyers? On the internet we currently see a spurring of social product and services that link and connect us in new ways and for new purposes. Or actually the purpose is ancient: As a social beast human beings have always had a desire to both stand out and be part of a social context at the same time. How do we as designers develop product that can fit this desire and how can we develop platforms that enable new social patterns to emerge and possibly novel social actions to impact the world.

Reflections / Blog

In this blog I will write about myself, design and that projects and events I participate in.

Meaningful Visions for Life is a design consultancy focusing on developing products, systems, services and processes for clients working in the merge between digital and physical market places.

I am Martin Ludvigsen, a designer, researcher and explorer of social interaction, design of technology, products and their systems. My focus right now is on design consulting and developing this design focus within the perspective of collective intelligence.

I have concluded a PhD-project within the Center for Interactive Spaces, a multi disciplinary research center with among others computer scientist and interaction designers from the Aarhus School of Architecture like myself.

Mystery Internet

Dec 8th, 2004 and tagged in General

Sometimes the net and the way you find information is truly strange and intriguing. I regularly visit a blog at www.plsj.org by Anne Galloway, a personal blog favourite of mine. And here I find a interesting post about a very interesting article on play. But the strange part of this is that the article is published at an equally interesting conference called Other Players, which takes place yesterday, today and tomorrow in Copenhagen, at the ITU - practically just around the corner from Aarhus. Anne is sitting in Canada reporting on a Norwegians article published at a Danish conference. I met Anne in Rome and drop by her blog once in a while to see what she is up to, and that is how I find a conference in my own backyard.

Conclusion: don't trust physical proximity and all that stuff – information travels in networks – don't ever forget.

Turkey Design Exercise

Dec 6th, 2004 and tagged in General

Friday I got involved in planning next years course for the third year students at the Department for Design at Aarhus School of Architecture (AAA). It is going to be a project aiming at designing a cultural \"embassy\" for Turkish culture and their possible future inclusion into the European Union.

Design Is Politics, and with this project we wish to adress our own prejudices about Turkey and turkish culture, economy, society etc. Reports will follow.

Today I Swam Across

Dec 6th, 2004 and tagged in General

One of the important everyday distractions I use to get my head out of all this research and stress stuff, I seem to call everyday life, is to go swimming in our local Aarhus Bay. In Danish it's called winter bathing or Viking bathing, and it is refreshingly cold. The water temperature this week has gone up to 6 degrees after a promising 2 degrees (yes Celsius – I'm very metric). Promising because a quick drop in the temperature this early in the bathing season could suggest an icy swim later in maybe January or February .

Going across is what one does when you really beat the cold and swim across the halfway enclosed swimming area and climb up a ladder on the other side.

One day I will try and snap a picture of myself or friends in the cold, but since everyone are butt-naked, most members frown on the presence of cameras.. (yes that has a double meaning).

Other favourite distractions are: love, art, gadgets, friends and www.mvl.dk

FLUIDS - flexible learning in Denmark

Dec 2nd, 2004 and tagged in General

The Acronym makes sense in Danish.

After setting up our presentation for NEXT2004 in BaseCamp in CPH, I am now at the FLUIDS-conference in Snoghøj. It's about flexible learning in the public school and elsewhere, and it's pretty interesting since the focus is on young peoples use of the internet. So by now we have had a presentation by Denmarks best former Action Quake player Lars Zilmer-Pedersen and before him, the director of IO interactive - the makers of Hitman - Janos Flösser . Both were really cool. And the audience which is primarily school directors and older guys like that got an eyeopener.

On the Move

Nov 29th, 2004 and tagged in General

In the next couple of days I will on the move in and around Copenhagen. It's time to move my girlfriend back home to Aarhus from Vordingborg where she has been working for a while, and on the way there I will attend one seminar - Crossroads at ITU, starring one of my current heros: Paul Dourish - and install the iFloor at the NEXT-exhibition in Base Camp (exhibition to run 1st and 2nd december)
